Abstract

Introduction: The Behavior Change Readiness Stage Assessment Questionnaire based on the Transtheoretical Model assesses behaviors related to eating and physical activity. Thus, it is possible to investigate the effect of treatments on changing the behavior of individuals with obesity and propose necessary interventions. Objective: To analyze the effects of an educational health intervention for the treatment of obesity on the eating behavior and physical activity of individuals with obesity. Method: The intervention consisted of five group educational workshops. Twenty-seven questionnaires applied in the first workshop and in the last workshop were analyzed. This questionnaire assesses the five stages of behavior (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance) in four domains (portions of food, fat, fruits and vegetables, and physical activity). Results: The global assessment, carried out through the frequency of responses, demonstrates that, in the first workshop, 40.7% were in the pre-action stage (pre-contemplation, contemplation or preparation). In the last workshop, only 19.6% remained at this stage. Therefore, 81.4% were in the action stage (action or maintenance) at the end of the workshops. The domains with the best performance were food servings and physical activity with a reduction in pre-action individuals of approximately 27%. Conclusion: The developed intervention proved to be effective in the evolution of the stages of readiness to change eating behavior and physical activity. The evolution was favorable because most individuals with obesity participating in the educational workshops were, in the end, more motivated to change their behavior.
