Abstract

Introduction: The aging process is not synonymous with illnesses and disabilities. However, the elderly are susceptible to chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Objective: to evaluate how depression, family functionality and diabetes control, as assessed by glycated hemoglobin levels, impact the Quality of Life (QoL) of elderly people with DM2.  Methods: elderly people were obtained in relation to: QoL (The World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire - Bref - WHOQOL-bref. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Results: there were 252 elderly people with DM2; over 60 years old; time ; diagnosis of DM2 aged 15 ± 9. The factors that positively impacted QoL were absence of depression and family dysfunction, respectively in five and three domains of the WHOQOL-bref. High levels of HbA1c had a negative impact on QoL. Conclusion: the QoL of the elderly was influenced by modifiable factors: depression, family functionality and HbA1c.
