Use of fabric masks by the population in containing the dissemination of COVID-19: scoping review

Abstract

Introduction: Covid-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, with a clinical picture of asymptomatic infections and severe respiratory conditions, highly transmissible. Objective: to map and summarize the evidence and gaps in the literature on the use of tissue masks by the population as a strategy to contain the dissemination of Covid-19. Methods: This is a Scoping Review and the search for articles was carried out in the databases PUBMED, Cochrane, BVS and LILACS. There was no restriction on language and time frame. The methodology was developed according to the scope and guideline review PRISMA-ScR. Results: 498 articles were found, eleven of which were included after analyzing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies show that fabric masks, such as cotton with high thread density, reduce the transmission of droplets and aerosols and can be effective in reducing contamination by SARS-CoV-2. Conclusion: In low-risk situations, the use of multi-layer fabric masks provides protection against the transmission of covid-19. However, there is a need for research in relation to the ideal model, the influence of humidity by expiration, the time of use and the number of washes.
