Abstract

The question about the contaminations produced by the mercury on a global scale produced different initiatives on several levels (global, regional and national) and to find a solution for the impacts on health and environment, the international community assign a Minamata´s Convention on mercury in October 2013. The objective of Minamata´s Mercury Convention is to protect the human health and the environment from the anthropogenic emissions of mercury beyond technical-scientist, political and transverse joins, addressing the entire product life cycle. The Latin-American countries, led by Brazil, had strong views on the need for provisions on health in the field of environmental multilateral convention. On the 16th article, about health issues, has incentives for Member States to develop and implement strategies and programs to identify and protect vulnerable populations. The Convention also provides for the replacement of products containing added mercury used in health services (thermometers, sphygmomanometers) to be replaced by 2020. Regarding dental amalgams, the provisions included measures to reduce their use. About preservative thimerosal/thiomersal vaccine, it was withdrawn from the provisions of the Convention, while still allowing use. Professionals and health ministries can contribute to actions aimed at health promotion, ratification and implementation of the Convention.
