INTRODUCTION: The informed consent term (TCI) is obtained for health research and procedures, already well established in practice and literature. The purpose of the term is to protect the patient's autonomy. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the TCI used at the reahabilitation Brasilia Hospital and the considerations to achieve the bioethical objectives. METHOD: Application of questionnaires to patients in October 2016. Data were analyzed in Excell, content analysis and bioethical analysis. RESULTS: 87% of the patients stated that they did not read the signed (TCI). It was asked to read and then answered the questionnaires, 65 accepted to participate in the survey, mean age 45 years, female (50.7%), 47.7% married, 85% from the Federal District and Goiás, 9%), Catholics in 57%, 100,17 days with the disease, 61% hospitalized for orthopedic procedures and Plastic Surgery (30%). In the analysis of the content appeared classes like utility, understanding, doubts and suggestions. The word "risk" was the most frequent. CONCLUSION: The considerations for improving the term and achieving bioethical goals were to provide the term in advance so that the patient has time to read and discuss with family members; Availability of staff to answer questions; Encourage the reading, dialogue and participation in the decision-making process; Presentation in the form of audio; Application of standard text with clear language and the possibility of specific configurations appropriate to the patient's need and the specificities of the procedure to be performed.
